EUREKA! Supermarket coming to Puerto Aventuras

Developer Roman Rivera Torres confirms

land clearing near Puebla is for Chedraui

Posted 8/06/10 by Pelican Press staff

What has long been a dream of many Puerto Aventuras snowbirds, ex-pats and the indigenous population is coming to fruition.

What began as a whispered rumor a few days ago about land clearing across the highway from the resort area adjacent to the Puebla’s main road is now confirmed by PA developer Roman Rivera Torres, who in a brief e-mail, told the Pelican Press yesterday (Aug. 5/2010): “Yes, the clearing across the highway is for the construction of a Chedraui store that we promoted.”

Congratulations are in order for Mr. Rivera Torres and the Chedraui organization, which is reputedly the fourth largest retailer in Mexico employing about 25,000 people.

Whether the project includes, as some rumors would have it, another Pemex gasoline station and other retail space has not been confirmed, which is not really necessary this early in the development stage, giving developers a chance to get their ducks in order.

Most gringos who call Puerto Aventuras “paradise” have long wished for a nearby supermarket since not all long-term visitors have cars and would prefer to avoid too frequent travel to Playa del Carmen and/or Cancun to food shop.

This is good news also for PA’s friends in nearby Akumal and other pockets of development like Chemuyil and Pamuul whose residents will be closer to the necessities of life with less travel time and effort, particularly for the more elderly residents.

A nearby supermarket of Chedraui’s caliber and moderate pricing policy should also help enhance sales of residential units, both existing and planned in the Phase 4 construction getting under way in Puerto Aventuras under Mr. Rivera Torres’ administration.

The already congenial and accommodating resort and marina lifestyle Puerto Aventuras offers can only be enhanced by such a substantial retail development in addition to creating more local jobs and revitalizing the highway area that will further link the people of the Puebla and resort, helping make the community more seamless and congenial.

Most PA residents have shopped at the Chadraui outlets in Playa del Carmen and are thus familiar with its offerings, but perhaps not with the company itself, which is headquartered at Xalapa in Veracruz and publicly traded on the Mexico Exchange.

It was founded as a diversified company in 1927 in Xalapa by Lebanese businessman Lazaro Chedraui Chaya, but didn’t open its first supermarket until 1971 in Xalapa. It then acquired 29 supermarkets from the Carrefour Co. in 2005 and now has some 140 supermarkets, hyperstores and wholesale operationss in 13 eastern and southern Mexico states selling groceries, clothing and a considerable mix of non-perishable items.

Various sources say the company owns more than a dozen La Hozaga bakeries and has a substantial stake in Bodega Latina, which has some dozen El Super supermarkets in the Los Angeles, Cal., area.

The company, Grupo Comercial Chedraui, S.A. de C.V., also has a real estate arm, provides administrative and goods transport services, owns check-cashing and remittance locations under the CheSuma name and acts as a wholesale store operator.

The Pelican Press will endeavor to continue to follow this important story as it develops as to when the outlet will open, what expected impact it might have on existing small businesses, if any other businesses are planned for the location and whether other attendant projects such as a new or added entrance to the resort are also envisioned.

Onward and forward!
